One school, one journey, two programs
Humpty Dumpty's programs are designed to grow with children from their first classroom experience through kindergarten readiness. Each age group combines loving care, social-emotional development, purposeful play and age-appropriate learning.
Three-Year-Old Preschool Program
Growing Independence, Confidence & Curiosity

Our Three-Year-Old Preschool Program provides a warm and nurturing environment where children can become more independent, build friendships and develop a love of learning. At this age, an important part of the school experience is learning how to share, cooperate with friends, express feelings and transition comfortably from one activity to another. Our teachers support the development of these important social and self-regulation skills throughout the day.
Children also begin building early academic skills through play and teacher-guided activities: exploring letters and letter sounds, enjoying story time and art projects, and discovering early science concepts through fun, hands-on themes. Movement is an important part of the day too — children develop gross motor skills through outdoor play, games and movement activities, with our indoor gym providing plenty of room to stay active when the weather keeps us inside.

Four-Year-Old Pre-K / UPK Program
Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Our Four-Year-Old Pre-K/UPK Program builds on the social and emotional foundations children have developed in preschool while introducing a stronger focus on the academic skills they will need for kindergarten. Each morning begins with daily affirmations that encourage confidence and social-emotional growth. Throughout the day, children learn through a combination of teacher-guided instruction, purposeful play and hands-on activities.
What Children Learn
Children are assessed twice during the school year to help teachers understand their development and support their continued progress. The UPK program follows applicable state curriculum requirements.
Building Early Reading Skills
The program incorporates the Heggerty approach to phonemic awareness — an oral and auditory program designed to build foundational skills that children will use as they learn to read.
The goal is to connect these listening and sound-awareness skills with phonics instruction so children can begin applying what they've learned to reading and writing print.
A Typical Day
The day opens with daily affirmations, then flows between teacher-guided instruction, purposeful play and hands-on activities, with time in our children's library and indoor gym woven throughout.
Program Details
- Children must be 4 years old by December 1
- Children must be toilet trained
- Assessed twice during the school year
Schedule Options
- UPK/Pre-K meets 5 days/week, 9:00 AM–2:00 PM
- Before & after care available; school hours 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
A Huntington tradition since 1975
History, philosophy, staff, class ratios, safety and the community traditions that make our school special.
Five decades of children growing up here
Humpty Dumpty Nursery School has been part of the Huntington community since 1975, proudly serving families throughout the area. For five decades, our focus has remained simple: provide children with a happy, safe and nurturing environment where they can develop confidence, independence, friendships and a lifelong love of learning.
Our programs grow with your child. Our youngest students begin by developing language, social and self-regulation skills through play and exploration. As children progress through preschool and Pre-K, we gradually introduce more structured literacy, mathematics, science and kindergarten-readiness activities.
Just as importantly, children have time to be children: making friends, creating art, playing outside, moving in our indoor gym, discovering new things and having fun.

Experienced teachers our families know by name
One of the things that makes Humpty Dumpty special is the experience and dedication of our staff. Our team includes highly qualified teachers and teacher assistants who are passionate about early childhood education, including New York State certified teachers.
Many members of our staff have been part of the Humpty Dumpty family for more than 20 years, providing a level of continuity and experience that is increasingly rare.
Staff members maintain CPR/AED certification, with recertification every two years, and complete 30 hours of ongoing training every two years.

Traditions & Events Throughout Our Year
From five decades of family traditions to the celebrations sprinkled throughout the calendar, here’s what makes the Humpty Dumpty year so special.

Pajama Program
Humpty Dumpty Nursery School is proud to be a longstanding supporter of the Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing pajamas to children in need.
For 18 years, Humpty Dumpty families have come together for our annual pajama collection. Each year, our school community donates more than 100 pairs of pajamas — giving our students a chance to experience the joy of helping others. We celebrate their accomplishment with one of our favorite traditions: a school pajama party.

Community Workers Week
Every October, members of our local community visit Humpty Dumpty to teach children about the important roles people play in keeping our community healthy, safe and connected — including the Fire Department, Police Department, our local librarian, mail carrier and dentist.
These visits make learning memorable while introducing children to safety, different careers, and the importance of respecting the people who help others.

Fall Festival
Every autumn, our playground fills with pumpkins, hay bales and crisp fall fun. Children visit our mini pumpkin patch, enjoy seasonal games and crafts, and pick out a pumpkin of their very own to take home.

Halloween Parade
On Halloween, our hallways become a runway as students — and teachers — show off their costumes in our annual parade. Families are invited to cheer on their little superheroes, princesses and dinosaurs before the fun continues with classroom parties.

Holiday Show & Party
Each December, our students take the stage for a festive holiday show filled with songs and cheer, followed by a classroom party complete with treats, crafts and a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Mother’s Day Breakfast
Every May, we invite moms and grandmothers into the classroom for a special breakfast celebration. Children present handmade gifts and cards made just for the occasion — a sweet, memorable morning for the whole family.

Bike & Ice Cream Day
As the school year winds down, students bring their bikes, scooters and trikes for an afternoon of riding, safety tips from local police, and sunshine on our playground — capped off with everyone’s favorite treat: ice cream.

Three-Year-Old Moving Up Ceremony
At the end of the year, our Preschoolers are celebrated with a special Moving Up Ceremony marking their transition into our Pre-K/UPK classroom the following fall — a proud milestone for children and families alike.

Pre-K Graduation
Our oldest students close out their Humpty Dumpty journey with a heartfelt graduation ceremony — caps, gowns and all — before heading off to kindergarten in the fall.
